Selah: Stop, Pause, Reflect

“Challenging behavior occurs when the demands and expectations being placed upon a child outstrip the skills they have to respond.”

What is Parent Consulting?

Have you ever wished someone could be a fly on the wall and give you input in the midst of parenting? Maybe you feel like you’re always worried about whether you are making the right decisions in your effort to help your child or you no longer feel confident on how to handle your child or teens big feelings for 100th time in the day. You’ve read all the books, tried all the things but nothing seems to work, or at least work over time. For me parent consulting is an opportunity for another skilled person to see areas that we can’t see in ourselves. To reflect back reality of what is going well and areas that support and guidance is needed.

Why Parent Consulting?

When we become parents so much of how we were raised has an effect on how we parent our own children. We may avoid using methods used by our own parents, or incorporate ways we wish we were parented. Sometimes these ideas conflict with what your children need and can interfere in your effectiveness of your parenting. Other times your child has needs that you don’t feel skilled or equipped in handling. Parent consulting can help increase healthy communication, and help parents and children see and hear each other more effectively. Learn to gain back your parenting confidence, learn to parent in a way that maintains connection with your child, and parent from a place of calm (60-70% of the time).

My Approach

I specialize in working with neurotypical and neurodivergent children, teens, and young adults who are looking for help with life skills and behavioral coping strategies. I work in collaboration with my clients to create systems and strategies that work for them to create independence and functional access to activities within their daily lives. I work from a wellness and strength-based perspective, meeting each client and their family where they are at and progressively moving them towards their desired goals.

I utilize an eclectic approach to behavioral consultation and life skills intervention. Pulling from traditional behavior therapy, attachment theory, and positive parenting. My own parenting style leans towards conscious parenting. Creating secure attachments with my children, seeing them as individuals, providing space and discipline for them to learn who they are is a lifelong journey.

When teaching new skills, I use systematic shaping, direct teaching, role-play, and modeling when teaching new coping behaviors and life skills. Meeting clients where they are, moving in step with my clients towards progression of desired goals. I do not impose my own goals or desires on my clients or their families, nor do I move faster than my clients are ready to move.
